How to Apply for VA Benefits for Assisted Living

Step 1

First, the Veteran must have certified copies of his or her discharge papers. If the Veteran has a copy of his or her DD 214, take it to a local Veteran's office where they will make certified copies at no charge. If there is no copy available, contact the VA to get a copy.

Overview of VA benefits

The Aid and Attendance (A&A) Pension provides benefits for veterans and surviving spouses who require the regular attendance of another person to assist in eating, bathing, dressing and undressing or taking care of the needs of nature. It also includes individuals who are blind or a patient in a nursing home because of mental or physical incapacity. Assisted care in an assisting living facility also qualifies.

Late Stage and End-of-life Alzheimer’s Care

In the later phases of Alzheimer ’s disease (AD), it becomes evident that in spite of the best care, attention, and treatment, your loved one is approaching the end of life. At this stage, a patient can no longer communicate directly, is totally dependent for all personal care, and is generally confined to bed. Unable to recognize once cherished people and objects, or to verbally express basic requirements, the person with Alzheimer’s completely depends on sensitive caregivers to advocate, connect, and attend to her needs.

Tips for caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease

Be sensitive and gentle about informing the patient of the diagnosis.

There will be times when you’ll want to remind the person that they have Alzheimer’s. At other times it might be better to refer to a “memory problem.” Even if you repeatedly tell the elder that they have Alzheimer's disease, they may not remember that you told them. Be prepared to patiently repeat the information at times when you’re trying to help the person understand why they can’t do something or why you are taking over a task the person used to do.
